About Checkers Flores
Ready to meet your new best friend? Apply now! Checkers was abandoned in Norwalk, California at just 4 months old when his family left for vacation and didn’t want to pay for boarding—but thanks to a caring rescue, his story took a fortunate turn. Since being saved, Checkers has flourished in foster care, learning how to play and love with the guidance of another dog companion. With a Maltese dad and a black Havanese mix mom, Checkers is a playful, loving pup still catching up on early puppy lessons, and he especially enjoys romping around with his foster sibling. He’s fully vaccinated (including his thimerosol-free rabies shot), heartworm negative, microchipped, and now confidently walking on a leash and fully house trained. While a little wary of car rides, he’s making progress and is already crate trained, though he prefers cozying up in bed with his people and dog buddy. Checkers would thrive with a retired or semi-retired adopter—ideally someone home most of the day. If you already have a fun-loving dog age six or younger, especially a playful female, he’d likely fit right in. He’ll be available for adoption starting February 1st, 2026, and weighs around 14 pounds as an adult with a soft, long apricot and gray coat. As a Cancer sun sign (born July 11), Checkers is sure to be especially sensitive and loyal, loving the comfort of family. Please note: his rescue prefers to wait until puppies are a year old before neutering, prioritizing long-term health and longevity. Every animal deserves a happy ending. This one starts with you.
