About Flynn
Flynn is a red merle, rough-coated Border Collie with a mysterious past. He came into rescue with heartworms, an injured paw, and not much trust in people. After serious medical care, he's healthier, but his intense prey drive and determination to escape are unmatched—even the tiniest gap is enough for him to slip through if he catches a scent. No treats or commands can draw his focus away from wildlife. Flynn must be supervised whenever outdoors, even inside a secure, fenced yard, and most likely needs to remain leashed at all times. He's made progress building trust and now greets people, even children, warmly on walks. Flynn enjoys attention from his foster family and lets strangers, including kids, pet him without issue. Despite living with several other dogs, he doesn't get along with all of them and is best as the only dog in the home; if another dog is present, careful introductions are required. Flynn absolutely cannot live with cats or small animals due to his extreme prey drive—he's already injured a cat in the past. Flynn is house trained and neutered, but he deals with severe storm and noise phobia, leading to panic, destructive episodes, and loss of control during thunder or gunshots. He’s on anti-anxiety medication, which may need adjustment and likely will be a lifelong necessity. Flynn requires an experienced adopter who understands the breed’s intensity, independent spirit, and training needs. He could excel with someone ready to provide him the job and activity he craves, especially sports like nosework. Suitable homes will have solid experience with border collies and a commitment to keeping him safe, securely contained, and enriched. Flynn is currently being fostered in Durham, NC.
