Winky showed up in rural Conway, SC, living as a stray, and still managed to protect another dog in need even though she was injured herself. Her eye has healed on its own, and she just needs some lubricating drops for now. Winky is a big, goofy Golden Retriever who loves being around people, other dogs, and even enjoys the company of children. She's incredibly playful and happiest when paired with a dog companion who matches her energy. She has not had much formal training and only knows how to sit, but she's whip-smart and responds well to treats and consistent routines. Her history left her with some trauma—she's very skittish around loud noises and anything new. Fireworks, gunshots, and machinery leave her desperate to get to her safe crate, so her adopter must provide a crate and a very secure (6 ft wood or vinyl) fence, and be ready to supervise her while outdoors. Winky really looks to other calm dogs for reassurance and learns quickly from their cues, so a stable, non-reactive furry sibling is a must. Patience and understanding will go a long way with her, especially when maneuvering in new surroundings or crowded places.
