About River
They are ready to love you; are you ready to apply? River is an old soul searching for his perfect match—could you be the one he’s been waiting for? Having faced a challenging start to life, River arrived at PAW very wary of the world. Thanks to the dedication of his foster family, he is finally learning to feel safe and has started to truly blossom. He’s now ready for a forever home with someone who can continue helping him grow into the incredible dog he’s meant to be. A true gentle giant, River is about two and a half years old and weighs around 70 pounds. He is a big, fluffy love bug who can feel anxious when meeting new people or in unfamiliar situations. However, with patience and time to warm up, River becomes loving and affectionate—especially with people and other dogs. For River, the presence of another dog is essential since he looks up to his canine companion for guidance and has learned so much by following his foster brother’s lead. River loves running and playing outside, but because he’s still learning how to walk on a leash, a fenced-in yard is a must for his forever home. Continued leash training and gently exposing him to new experiences are also important to help build his confidence. River takes daily medication that helps keep him calm, and his future family should be ready to continue this routine for his comfort and well-being. If you’re ready to open your heart to River, he’s ready to meet you—apply to adopt today! Please note: PAW places animals in the DC, MD, northern VA, and southern PA areas only. Give them the home they have been waiting for. Apply today.

Questions about River
What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?

How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?
This breed typically needs a large, secure outdoor space to be happy and healthy. A fenced yard is ideal for them to get adequate exercise and fulfill their natural instincts to roam and guard.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
Anatolian Shepherds can be very gentle and protective with children, especially when raised together. However, because of their large size and guardian instincts, they may do best with older children who understand how to interact respectfully with dogs.
