About Hanna

Hanna is a small, tricolor mix of Chihuahua and Rat Terrier, roughly a year old and weighing about 14 pounds. She arrived in Minnesota from Mexico after being picked up as a stray, so the world is still a little new to her. Shy at first, Hanna warms up when given some time and prefers the company of people. She gravitates toward gentle companionship and does especially well with other small dogs. Hanna is deaf, which makes her an especially observant and sensitive dog. She relies on watching people closely to understand what’s happening around her. She needs a laid-back, quiet environment—rowdy homes or shared-wall housing just stress her out, and she’s best matched with patient families where someone is home most of the time. Hanna gets anxious when left alone, so she isn’t a fit for someone out of the house all day. With proper introductions and slow transitions, Hanna bonds well and loves quietly hanging around her people. She’s still working on house training and crate training, and is especially difficult to potty on leash in winter; a fenced yard or use of puppy pads will help. She’d do best with kids over 9 who are used to dogs. Hanna hasn’t been around cats, so her reaction is unknown. If you want a sensitive companion who will stick close by and blossom in the right hands, Hanna might be your match. What are you waiting for? Apply today!

Questions about Hanna

  • What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?

Hanna, as a Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix, usually does best in a calm household with routines and a gentle touch. Smaller breeds like hers prefer environments that aren’t too loud or chaotic, especially since Hanna is also deaf and needs time to settle in.

  • How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?

Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mixes like Hanna don’t need a large yard but benefit from a secure, fenced area to explore and take care of business. Hanna, in particular, struggles with leash potty breaks, so an enclosed space or safe area is best.

  • Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?

Hanna would do best with children ages 9 and up who know how to respect a small dog's boundaries. She’s sensitive and needs gentle handling, making her a better fit for families with older kids.
