A cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, the Bernedoodle became popular in the early 2000s as a family companion that might combine the Bernese's gentle, affectionate nature with the Poodle's intelligence and lower-shedding coat. It is a crossbreed rather than a recognized breed, so size, coat and personality vary widely. Standards are the most common in rescue, while minis and smaller sizes come from crosses with smaller Poodles.
Many Bernedoodles are friendly, goofy and people-oriented, and they often do well with children. Their coats can be curly, wavy or straight, and most need brushing several times a week plus professional grooming every six to eight weeks. Adopters should also be ready for a dog that inherits health risks from both parents, especially joint problems and cancer from the Bernese side.
