Belgian Shepherds began as Belgian farm herding dogs, sorted into one breed with four coat types in 1891: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. Registries differ on whether they're one breed or four, and the AKC calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. Many dogs listed under this name are Malinois or Malinois mixes.
Expect an alert, athletic dog with a square frame and upright ears, typically 40 to 75 pounds. Most are intense and devoted to their people, and the drive that made them police and sport dogs means they need daily exercise, training and a job to do. The longer-coated varieties also bring plenty of shedding and, in Seattle, a good deal of mud indoors.
