Belgian farmers sorted their herding dogs into one breed with four coat types in 1891: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. The American Kennel Club recognizes four separate breeds and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog, so dogs may be listed under either name. Many dogs labeled Belgian Shepherd are Malinois or Malinois mixes.
All are square, elegant and watchful, bred to work. In SLC that suits people who hike the foothills, run trails or try a dog sport, and who want a dog that stays close indoors. Belgians usually need daily exercise, structured training and puzzles to think about, and most struggle when bored. Each dog varies, so the dog's own energy and behavior matter more than the label.
