The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in nineteenth-century Germany as an all-purpose hunting dog that could point birds, track wounded game and retrieve from land and water. The result is a lean, muscular dog with a short, dense coat in liver or liver and white, often ticked or roan, and an alert, noble head. Adults usually weigh 45 to 70 pounds.
GSPs tend to be friendly, affectionate and eager to work, and many stay intensely energetic until two or three years old. In San Antonio, that means building a daily outlet such as running, swimming or retrieving into your routine, and planning around the heat. A bored GSP may chew, bark, dig or escape, so training and mental games matter as much as miles. Dogs vary, and adult GSPs are often calmer than adolescents.
