The Australian Terrier was developed in 1800s Australia from rough-coated British terriers to kill rats and snakes and guard the homestead. It was the first native Australian breed recognized, and the AKC accepted it in 1960. Aussies weigh about 14 to 20 pounds and stand 10 to 11 inches tall, with a long body, erect ears, a harsh coat in blue and tan, sandy or red, and a soft topknot.
In Fort Worth, that history shows up in everyday routines. Many Aussies are confident, affectionate and quick to bark at anything unusual, and they may chase squirrels or other small animals with real conviction. The coat sheds lightly but needs regular brushing and occasional plucking. Dogs vary, so judge each dog by how it behaves rather than by the breed description alone.
