Crisp, square and alert, the Smooth Fox Terrier was developed in England to bolt foxes from their dens ahead of mounted hunts, and it remains every inch a working terrier. Its short, flat, dense coat is mostly white, so hunters could tell dog from fox, with black, tan or both on the head and body. It shares its history with the Wire Fox Terrier, and the two were shown as one breed in the United States until 1985.
Most Smooth Fox Terriers weigh about 15 to 19 pounds and pack a lot of energy and confidence into that frame. Many are playful, clever, curious and quick to chase anything that runs, and some are vocal diggers. They usually bond closely with family and enjoy games, but they need daily exercise, patient training and secure fencing. Adopters who appreciate a bold, busy small dog often find them excellent company.
