One of Portugal's oldest hunting breeds, the Podengo is a primitive-type hound that hunts by sight, scent and hearing at once. In its home country it comes in three sizes: the Grande for deer and boar, the Medio for rabbits and the tiny Pequeno. In the United States, the AKC recognizes the Pequeno as its own breed, while Portuguese Podengo usually means the medium and large dogs, which the AKC records through its Foundation Stock Service.
Podengos have wedge-shaped heads, large upright ears, a sickle tail and either a smooth or a wiry, bearded coat, usually in yellow or fawn with white. Many are lively, affectionate with family, alert to strangers and independent thinkers. They tend to suit active adopters who can provide secure fencing, daily running room and patient training, since a Podengo on a scent or sighting can be hard to call back.
