The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian herding dogs, alongside the Malinois, Tervuren and Belgian Sheepdog. It's named for the Chateau de Laeken, a Belgian royal residence, where these shepherds tended flocks and guarded linen laid out to bleach in the fields. The American Kennel Club added it to the Herding Group in 2020.
The harsh, tousled coat runs from fawn to reddish with a dark muzzle, and it sheds moderately. Many Laekenois are intelligent, alert and devoted to family while staying reserved with strangers. In Nashville, that adds up to a dog that does best with a job: daily leashed greenway walks, training games and a securely fenced yard. Dogs vary, and some are far more driven than others.
