The Chow Chow is one of the oldest dog lineages, a spitz from northern China that hunted, guarded, herded and pulled carts. The look is unmistakable: a square, heavy-boned body, a lion-like ruff, a scowling face and a blue-black tongue. The coat comes rough and offstanding or short and smooth, and both are double coats that shed heavily, so brushing is a regular chore.
Chows are dignified, independent and attached to a small circle of people. Many are quiet and tidy indoors, but they rarely beg for attention and dislike rough handling. Early socialization and calm, consistent training matter. Deep-set eyes limit side vision, so visitors should approach from the front. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Chow before deciding.
