The Beagle is a small scent hound that took its modern shape in 1830s England, from packs that hunted hare and rabbit by following a trail and giving voice. The result is a sturdy dog of roughly 18 to 30 pounds and 12 to 15 inches tall, with a domed skull, long soft ears and a white-tipped tail. Tricolor is the classic coat, though many colors occur, and Beagles in shelters are often mixes.
Many Beagles are cheerful and social, and they tend to enjoy company, other dogs included. The nose leads, so expect sniffing, trash-can raids and a dog that's hard to call back. In Philly, that means leashed walks, secure doors and gates, and a plan for company during work hours. Shedding is moderate and brushing is simple.
