The Appenzell Mountain Dog, called the Appenzeller Sennenhund in Switzerland, is one of four tricolor Swiss mountain breeds. It comes from the Appenzell region, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. Medium-sized and muscular at roughly 48 to 70 pounds, it has a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings and a tail curled over its back.
Appenzellers tend to be lively, alert and reserved with strangers, and devoted to their own families. They were bred to work all day, so they usually need exercise, training and a real job. The coat sheds moderately, more heavily in seasonal blowouts. The breed is rare in the United States, and dogs vary, so an active, experienced household often suits it best.
