The American Water Spaniel came out of the Wisconsin and Minnesota lake country in the 1800s, developed as a compact hunting partner that could ride in a small skiff, flush birds and retrieve ducks from cold water. It's Wisconsin's state dog and still an uncommon sporting breed. The dense coat, from tight curls to a marcel wave, comes in liver, brown or dark chocolate and sheds water well.
Many are eager, energetic and closely attached to their family, yet a little reserved with strangers. They're clever and sensitive, and sometimes vocal, so gentle, consistent training works better than harsh correction. Expect to brush that curly coat regularly and to see a youthful streak that lasts well past the first birthday. In a city like Philly, daily outings matter more than square footage.
