The American Eskimo Dog descends from German Spitz dogs and was renamed during World War I. Despite the name, it has no connection to Arctic sled dogs. Eskies come in toy, miniature and standard sizes, roughly 6 to 35 pounds, so a Philly rowhouse or a roomy twin can both work depending on the dog. The white double coat and lion-like ruff turn heads on any block.
Many Eskies are bright, playful and eager to please, and they became circus performers because they learn tricks fast. They also tend to be alert watchdogs that bark readily and can be reserved with strangers. Plan for heavy shedding, regular brushing, daily activity and plenty of company, since a bored or lonely Eskie may get noisy.
