Shih Tzus were palace dogs. Developed in China from small Tibetan dogs presented to the imperial court, they were prized by Ming and Qing royalty and bred to resemble the lion of Buddhist art, which gives the breed its name. The first dogs reached England around 1930 and the United States after World War II. A Shih Tzu is a sturdy toy dog with a short square muzzle, large dark eyes and a long, flowing double coat in almost any color.
Many Shih Tzus are friendly, outgoing and happiest sitting close to their people, and they generally get along with visitors and other pets. Their care centers on that coat, which mats quickly without daily brushing or a regular trim, and on the eyes, teeth and breathing issues that come with a flat face.
