The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the plains around Chartres to move and guard flocks of hundreds of sheep. Its short, weatherproof coat comes in black-and-tan or harlequin, with the tan legs that earned it the nickname "red stockings" and double dewclaws on each hind leg. Beaucerons also worked as messenger and sentry dogs in both world wars.
Today's Beauceron is typically intelligent, confident and loyal, though reserved with people it doesn't know. These powerful, athletic dogs mature slowly, often not settling until about age three. In OKC, that means a secure yard, daily exercise, ongoing socialization and calm, consistent training. Moderate shedding is normal, and the coat sheds heavily when the seasons change.
