A chocolate Lab is a Labrador Retriever wearing the breed's brown coat, one of three colors the breed standard accepts alongside black and yellow. Liver-colored puppies were recorded among British gun dogs by the 1890s, and because brown is recessive, both parents must carry the gene for it to appear. Chocolates share the Lab's sturdy build, otter tail, dense double coat and history as a retriever of game from land and water, with brown noses, eye rims and brown or hazel eyes.
Temperament does not change with color: many chocolate Labs are friendly, food-driven and eager to work with people, and they need the same daily exercise, training and portion control as any Lab. One difference is worth knowing. A large UK study found chocolates lived about a year and a half less on average and had more ear and skin problems.
