The Affenpinscher began as a ratter in German stables, kitchens and granaries, which explains the wiry, harsh coat and terrier-like nerve. Its name means monkey pinscher, a nod to the bearded, bright-eyed face. Most weigh 7 to 12 pounds and stand 9 to 12 inches tall, and the coat is most often black, though gray, silver, red and tan appear too.
In a city like Columbus, that personality plays out in apartments and rowhouses where a confident, curious dog notices everything. Affenpinschers are often loyal and playful with their people, but they can be bossy with larger dogs and impatient with rough handling from small children. Housetraining can be slow, so patience matters. Dogs vary, and a coat that sheds little still needs regular combing.
