The Belgian Shepherd began in Belgium, where a breed club and Professor Adolphe Reul sorted regional herding dogs into one breed in 1891. It comes in four coat types: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. The American Kennel Club registers them separately and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. Most shelter dogs listed under this name are Malinois or Malinois mixes.
All four are lean, square and alert, and the drive that made them police and military dogs also shapes life at home. In Albuquerque, that usually means daily trail time, training, and a household where someone is around often. Coat type changes the grooming load, but not the need for a job. Dogs vary, so judge the dog in front of you rather than the label.
