The Bearded Collie is a Scottish herding dog, built to drive sheep and cattle across rough hills, often out of the shepherd's sight. That work left it with stamina, an independent streak and a shaggy double coat. Puppies are born black, blue, brown or fawn, and the coat usually fades to lighter shades as the dog matures.
Beardies are cheerful, affectionate and known for bouncing on their hind legs when excited. They're usually friendly with strangers, though they can be stubborn and are often vocal. In Newark, that means planning for a daily outing in every season, patient reward-based training, and a long coat that mats quickly after muddy park walks unless it's brushed thoroughly each week. Dogs vary, so a Beardie's own personality counts for more than the breed label.
