Boxers trace back to late-1800s Germany, where hunting dogs once used to hold boar and deer were crossed with English Bulldogs. The result is a square, muscular dog with a short, shiny coat in fawn or brindle, often with white markings and a black mask. Boxers have worked as messenger, guard and police dogs, and today most live as family companions.
Many Boxers are clownish and affectionate, greeting people with wiggles and leaps, and they often stay puppyish for years. In Greensboro, that means planning on daily exercise, reward-based training and some supervision around small children. With a short face and thin coat, the breed dislikes both heat and cold. Dogs vary, and many shelter "Boxers" are mixes, so a dog's own behavior and a vet check tell you more than its looks.
