The Belgian Shepherd is one breed with four coat varieties in most registries: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. The AKC recognizes four separate breeds and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. All are square, elegant dogs of roughly 40 to 75 pounds, developed from Belgian herding stock and later famous as police and military workers.
Dogs of this type are watchful and devoted, and many are playful and affectionate once they know you. Coat and energy vary by variety and by dog, though. A Malinois has a short coat but often runs hotter, while the long-coated varieties blow thick undercoat in spring and fall. Baltimore adopters should picture a daily workout, not a weekend one.
