The Appenzell Mountain Dog, known in Switzerland as the Appenzeller Sennenhund, is the most energetic of the four tricolor Swiss mountain dog breeds. It comes from the Appenzell region in the northeast of the country, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. Medium-sized and muscular, it wears a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings and carries its tail curled over its back.
Appenzellers tend to be lively, alert and quick to sound the alarm, often reserved with strangers and devoted to their own people. They were bred to work all day, so they usually need plenty of exercise, training and a real job to stay content. The breed remains rare in the United States, and an experienced, active household often suits it best.
