Belgian farmers kept many types of herding dogs until a breed club and Professor Adolphe Reul sorted them into one breed in 1891, with four coat types: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. The American Kennel Club registers four separate breeds and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. Many dogs labeled Belgian Shepherd are Malinois or Malinois mixes.
Belgians are typically intense, watchful and devoted, with a drive to work that made them famous as police, military and sport dogs. In New Orleans, that means building a routine of exercise and training around hot, humid months, and having someone home often. Many are affectionate and responsive with capable owners, but they rarely settle for a sedentary life, and each dog varies.
