The Belgian Shepherd family began in Belgium, where herding dogs were sorted into one breed in 1891 with four coat types: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. The American Kennel Club registers them as four breeds and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. All share a square, elegant build, upright ears and a proud head. Many dogs listed under this name are Malinois or Malinois mixes.
These dogs are intense, watchful and devoted, and many are reserved with strangers. In Louisville, that can mean a dog that notices every bike on a Germantown sidewalk and every spring thunderstorm. They do best with people who enjoy training and give them a daily task, though each dog varies in how much it needs.
