Belgian Shepherds, also called Belgian Sheepdogs, come in four coat types: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. Most registries treat them as one breed, while the American Kennel Club recognizes four. Dogs labeled Belgian Shepherd are often Malinois or Malinois mixes, so coat length and energy can vary quite a bit from dog to dog.
Belgians are typically intense, watchful and devoted, developed to herd and later to serve as police and military dogs. In Indianapolis that drive is easy to feed with greenway miles and bark park visits, but it needs structure to go with it. Expect a dog that wants to stay close to you, and plan for training that continues well past puppyhood.
