Behind the famous shaggy coat and hair-covered eyes, the Old English Sheepdog is a strong, compact working dog from the west of England. Farmers used these dogs mainly as drovers, moving cattle and sheep along country roads to market, and the traditional docked tail earned them the nickname Bobtail. The profuse double coat comes in shades of gray, grizzle or blue with white, and the breed moves with a distinctive bear-like shuffle.
Many Old English Sheepdogs are cheerful, gentle and clownish, with a loud, ringing bark and a herding habit of nudging people where they want them. They tend to be patient with children and happy to join family activities. The coat is the biggest commitment: thorough brushing down to the skin every week or regular professional grooming, plus attention to heat, mud and debris that cling to all that hair.
