The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian herding dogs, alongside the Malinois, Tervuren and Belgian Sheepdog. It takes its name from the Chateau de Laeken, a Belgian royal residence, where these rough-coated shepherds tended flocks, and it also guarded linen laid out to bleach in the fields. The American Kennel Club, which treats the four as separate breeds, added it to the Herding Group in 2020.
A Laekenois has a tousled, harsh fawn to reddish coat with a dark muzzle, giving it a shaggier look than its relatives. Many are intelligent, alert and devoted to their families while staying reserved with strangers. They need daily exercise, training and real work for their minds, and are best suited to active people who want a capable partner.
