The Appenzell Mountain Dog, called the Appenzeller Sennenhund in Switzerland, is one of four tricolor Swiss mountain breeds. It comes from the Appenzell region in the northeast of the country, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. Medium-sized and muscular, it has a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings, and its tail curls over its back.
Appenzellers tend to be lively, confident and reserved with strangers, and devoted to their own people. They were bred to work all day, so they usually need exercise, training and a purpose. In Chicago, that means plenty of daily outings and a plan for the noise, since many bark at anything unusual. Dogs vary, so energy and temperament differ from one Appenzeller to the next.
