Belgian Shepherds come from Belgium, where a breed club and Professor Adolphe Reul sorted local herding dogs into one breed in 1891. There are four coat types: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. The American Kennel Club registers them separately and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. All share a square, elegant build and upright ears.
They're intense, watchful and devoted, and many are affectionate with their own people. In Honolulu's year-round warmth, a short-coated Malinois type usually copes more easily than the dense double coat of a Groenendael or Tervuren, which sheds heavily and needs regular brushing. Whatever the coat, these dogs need a job, whether that's training, scent games or long walks. Dogs vary widely, so temperament and energy differ from one Belgian to the next.
