Samoyeds began as working dogs of the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia, herding reindeer, pulling sleds and keeping camps company. That history shows in a medium, sturdy build, a dense white or cream double coat and a curled, plumed tail. Males usually run larger than females, and most land between 35 and 65 pounds.
Temperament varies from dog to dog, but many Samoyeds are sociable, talkative and eager to be involved in whatever the family is doing. They can be stubborn, and the coat sheds heavily a couple of times a year. In a place with hot summers like Lawrenceville, the practical questions are cooling, brushing and whether someone is home enough to keep a Sammie company.
