German Shorthaired Pointers were developed in nineteenth-century Germany as all-purpose hunting dogs that could point birds, track wounded game and retrieve from land and water. They're lean, muscular and athletic, with a short, dense coat in liver or liver and white, often ticked or roan.
That working heritage still shapes daily life. Many GSPs are affectionate, eager to please and happiest near their people, but they can be intensely energetic until two or three years old. A bored dog may chew, bark, dig or jump fences. Training, a job to do and daily hard exercise usually bring out a devoted, goofy companion. Dogs vary, so a GSP's energy and sensitivity will differ from one to the next.
