The Fox Terrier label covers two breeds, the Smooth and the Wire, which share a build and a personality but differ in coat. Both came out of Britain, where they were carried along on foxhunts to flush foxes from their dens, and the mostly white coat kept hounds and riders from mistaking them for quarry. The Toy Fox Terrier is a separate, smaller breed.
In Tampa, that history shows up as a dog that's quick, funny and hard to tire out, with a strong prey drive. Lizards and squirrels are tempting, so a leash matters anywhere without a fence. The Smooth's short coat takes little work, while the Wire needs regular clipping or stripping, which affects grooming costs. Dogs vary, and terrier mixes often share some of these traits.
