Pugs began as companions at the Chinese imperial court, traveled to Europe with Dutch traders in the sixteenth century, and later became favorites of the House of Orange and Queen Victoria. The modern Pug is square and sturdy, usually 14 to 18 pounds, with deep wrinkles, big dark eyes and a tail curled tightly over the hip, in fawn with a black mask or solid black.
Many Pugs are playful, affectionate and happiest following their people from room to room. In Lakeland, the care that matters most is keeping a Pug cool and lean. The short coat sheds heavily, and the skin folds and prominent eyes need regular attention. Reported lifespans vary, from roughly 11 to 15 years, so ask a veterinarian what to expect as your Pug ages.
