The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the plains around Chartres to move and guard big flocks over long distances. Its short, weatherproof double coat, black-and-tan or harlequin coloring, tan leg markings and double dewclaws on each hind leg all come from that working life. Beaucerons also served as messenger and sentry dogs in both world wars.
Many Beaucerons are intelligent, loyal and confident, with a reserved streak around strangers. They tend to bond closely with their people, respond best to calm, consistent training, and often don't settle until about three years old. In Denver, that means planning for daily leashed exercise, ongoing socialization and a secure yard, and remembering that each dog differs from the breed description.
