The Appenzeller Sennenhund comes from the Appenzell region of northeast Switzerland, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. It's the most energetic of the four tricolor Swiss mountain dogs. Medium-sized and muscular, it weighs roughly 48 to 70 pounds and wears a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings, and its tail curls over its back.
Appenzellers are lively and alert, often reserved with strangers and devoted to their own people. They were bred to work all day, so they need exercise, training and a job to do. Dogs vary, but many are quick to bark and may try to herd children or other pets. The breed is uncommon in the US, and an experienced, active household usually suits it best.
