The modern Beagle took shape in 1830s England from small hare-hunting hounds, including a pack kept by the Reverend Phillip Honeywood in Essex. It's a compact, sturdy scent hound with a domed skull, long soft ears and a white-tipped tail. In the US, Beagles come in two varieties, under 13 inches and 13 to 15 inches, and most weigh 18 to 30 pounds.
Many Beagles are cheerful, sociable and curious, with a pack dog's love of company. The nose drives everything, so expect howling, trash raiding and unreliable recall. In Colorado Springs, where city parks and trails require leashes outside designated areas, that's manageable with daily sniff walks, secure fencing and food-based training. Dogs vary, and many Beagles in shelters are mixes.
