Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers come from Ireland, where they spent generations as all-purpose farm dogs, catching rats, guarding the yard and helping with livestock. The look is unmistakable: a soft, silky, gently wavy coat in shades of wheat that falls forward over the eyes. Puppies often start darker and lighten through adolescence, settling into adult color around age two.
Wheatens are typically cheerful and people-loving, known for a bouncy, jumping hello. They're usually softer-tempered than many terriers but still clever, a bit stubborn and quick to chase squirrels and other small animals, which matters on San Diego's leashed canyon trails. The coat sheds little but mats easily, so brushing and professional grooming are part of the routine. Dogs vary, and the breed also carries a higher risk of certain protein-losing kidney and intestinal diseases.
