The Thai Ridgeback is a medium-sized primitive breed from eastern Thailand, where poor roads kept a hunting and guard dog isolated for centuries. It stands about 20 to 24 inches tall and weighs roughly 35 to 75 pounds, with a short, smooth coat in red, black, blue or pale fawn and the signature ridge of backward-growing hair along its spine. The breed is still rare outside Thailand.
Many Ridgebacks are deeply loyal to their families, reserved with strangers, athletic and independent. In San Diego, that means busy sidewalks and crowded park areas call for good leash manners and early socialization, and the dog's jumping ability matters wherever a yard fence is low. Ridgebacks vary, so spend time with a dog before deciding whether its personality fits your home.
