The Schipperke is a small, usually black spitz-type dog from Flanders, Belgium, where it worked as a ratter and watchdog. Its name is often read as "little captain." The fox-like face, thick ruff and frequently tailless rear make it easy to spot, and adults typically weigh 10 to 16 pounds.
Many Schipperkes are confident, curious and busy, devoted to their families and wary of strangers. They're clever and can be stubborn, and the urge to chase small animals runs strong. Twice-yearly coat blows leave loose undercoat everywhere, so regular brushing is part of the deal. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Schipperke before deciding.
