The Italian Greyhound is the smallest sighthound, a miniature greyhound about 13 to 15 inches tall and usually under 15 pounds. Small dogs of this type appear in Roman art and Renaissance paintings, though they were first used to course hare and rabbit. The satiny coat, slender legs and deep chest give them an elegant, fragile look.
In San Diego, the breed's size suits condo and apartment life, and the short coat needs little brushing. Most Iggies are affectionate and a bit sensitive, happiest pressed against their people, though they sprint hard, tire fast and chase anything small. Thin skin and fine bones make them prone to cold and leg injuries, and their teeth need daily care, so gentle handling and ramps from the couch matter.
