Belgian Shepherds are medium-large herding dogs, usually 40 to 75 pounds, with a square, elegant build and upright ears. They come in four coat varieties: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. In shelters, the short-coated Malinois and Malinois mixes are the ones adopters meet most often, though any variety can turn up.
In LA, their intensity is the main thing to plan around. These dogs are watchful, quick and devoted, and most want a job: structured training, long outings and puzzle games. Moderate to heavy shedding is normal, and coat type changes how much brushing and heat care a dog needs. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Belgian before deciding and look at how it behaves.
