The Basset Hound is a short-legged scent hound that began in France and was developed into its heavier modern type in Britain. Long ears, loose skin and droopy eyes give it a famously sad look, and its nose is second only to the Bloodhound's for following ground scent. Adults usually weigh 40 to 65 pounds on legs just 11 to 15 inches tall, so they're heavier than they look.
Most Bassets are friendly, patient and happy to lounge, though they can be stubborn and loud when a scent or boredom takes over. In Phoenix, that nose gets plenty to follow in dusty desert yards, and moderate year-round shedding, ear folds and a low-slung body call for steady weekly care. Dogs vary, so a Basset's own energy and habits matter more than the breed label.
