The Tervuren is the long-haired, fawn-and-black member of the Belgian Shepherd family, named for a village near Brussels. The American Kennel Club recognizes it as its own breed, while internationally it's one variety alongside the Groenendael, Malinois and Laekenois. Adults are elegant, medium-large herders, usually 45 to 75 pounds, with a mahogany coat tipped in black and a dark mask.
Many Tervurens are intelligent, sensitive and devoted to their families, and reserved with strangers. They want a job, whether that's agility, obedience or long outings, and gentle, consistent training works far better than harsh correction. In Gilbert, that means planning exercise around the heat and brushing often, since the thick double coat sheds heavily in spring and fall. Dogs vary, so get to know the dog in front of you.
