Thanks largely to Lassie, the Collie is one of the most recognizable dogs in America. The breed grew out of Scottish sheep-herding dogs and was refined in Victorian Britain into the elegant dog seen today, with a long, wedge-shaped head, expressive eyes and a dense double coat. In the United States, Rough Collies with their flowing mane and Smooth Collies with a short, sleek coat are two varieties of one breed.
Many Collies are gentle, sensitive and closely tuned to their families, and they have a long reputation as patient companions for children. They still carry herding instincts, which can show up as barking, circling or nudging at running kids. Adopters should plan for heavy seasonal shedding, regular brushing, daily exercise and a vet who knows about the drug sensitivity common in the breed.
