Coonhound is a family of American scent hounds, including the Black and Tan, Redbone, Bluetick, Treeing Walker, American English and Plott. They were developed to trail raccoons at night and bay at the base of a tree until the hunters arrived. Most have a short, smooth coat, long drooping ears and an exceptional nose.
Indoors, many are mellow, sociable couch companions. Outdoors, the nose often overrides everything else. Mobile's wooded yards and bayous are full of raccoons, opossums and foxes, so a hound has plenty to follow. Weights run from about 45 to 100 pounds. Expect a dog that needs a leash, a tall solid fence, daily exercise and patient, food-motivated training.
